Svaneti is a high-mountain region in north-west Georgia, one of the most remote and untouched in the Caucasus. In three days you can see the essentials.

Day 1: the road, Ushguli and the lakes

We set off early from Tbilisi. At lunchtime the Zagar Pass and Ushguli, one of the highest-altitude settlements in Europe. We watch the sunset at the Koruldi lakes, then a sauna with a hot tub.

Day 2: Shdugra

We drive into the Becho valley and walk to Georgia’s highest waterfall, Shdugra. 340 m of ascent, a 2 km trail. On the way we see Ushba and pick mushrooms and berries. Lunch at a trout farm and sunset on the Hatsvali cable car in Mestia.

Day 3: the Chalaadi glacier

A hike to the Chalaadi glacier, the source of the Mestiachala river, an ice cave, then the Tetnuldi cable car with a view of Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak.

How hard is it

The routes are designed for average or below-average fitness. Hikes are radial and need no hiking backpack; they were designed with local guides.

When to go
