Indonesia: Raja Ampat dive tour

Raja Ampat is an Indonesian archipelago of 1500 islands surrounding the richest coral reef on Earth. It lies off the north-western tip of New Guinea, right on the equator. The main draw is untouched nature above and below the water: even at shallow depth you can see clownfish, manta rays, sea turtles and small sharks.

Where

Kri island is a nature reserve, known for its pristine nature and lack of tourist infrastructure. The only type of lodging on the island is the homestay: small resorts of bamboo bungalows run by locals. All this lets the islands stay untouched and free of overcrowding.

Accommodation

Overwater homestay bungalows, three meals a day, diving and snorkelling at the resort.

Day-by-day program

Day 1
We meet at Sorong airport and take the ferry together to Waisai island, where the homestay boat picks us up. Our homestay is on the most beautiful island, Kri! We spend the first evening snorkelling at the house reef.

Day 2
Diving is planned for day two. Our homestay host is a diving instructor with years of experience. He takes us to the most spectacular spots.

Day 3
We head to the signature of Raja Ampat, Pianemo island. Its scenery is printed on the 100,000 rupiah banknote! Besides swimming in crystal-clear lagoons, anyone who wants can snorkel with blacktip reef sharks.

Day 4
A rest day on our home island of Kri: hikes, visits to local villages and snorkelling on the most beautiful reefs.

Day 5
Diving again! This time, besides coral reefs, giant manta rays await, the symbol of the archipelago.

Day 6
We are taken to one of the most amazing places in the archipelago, Kabui Bay! Landscapes straight out of Avatar, mangroves, and birds of paradise live here, the holy grail of any birdwatcher.

Day 7
On the final day the program is free: revisit favourite places on Kri, snorkel or simply swim in turquoise water and rest before the long journey home.

We say goodbye to the warm islands: in the morning a transfer to Waisai and then on to Sorong.
